Kenneth Nichols Hart

Kenneth Nichols Hart, 104, of Rutland, VT died May 1, 2025 at The Pines of Rutland. He was born December 7, 1920 in Pittsford, VT, the son of Russell Hawkins and Florence (Nichols) Hart.

Following his graduation from Rutland High School, he enlisted in the US Army and served during WW II. After being discharged, he attended and graduated from New England Institute in Boston, MA and began his long career as a funeral director in Rutland. In 1947, he began working at Tossing Funeral Home under the then owner, Gordon C. Goodrich and took over from him in 1961. A daughter, Jody and son, Brad joined him in 1982 and 1989, respectively. He retired at age 92, but was always available for advice as our consultant!

In 1947, he married a Rutland girl, Anne Green and they raised three children. He attended as many of their concerts and sporting events as he could fit into his busy work schedule.

A 73 year member of Grace Congregational UCC, he served as a Deacon, member of the Stewardship committee and was part of the Men's Luncheon Group.

He was a member of the VT Funeral Director's Association, the National Funeral Director's Association, Rutland Lion's Club and theCenter Lodge #34, F & AM of Rutland.

One of his most memorable times was taking the Honor Flight New England with his granddaughter, Emily. Family trips to Ogunquit and York Beach, ME were always treasured times.He also enjoyed woodworking, playing bridge, golf, tennis, horseshoes and ping-pong.

In 2016, he sold his home and moved to the Maples Senior Living Community. Popovers, cookies, brownies, blueberry muffins, banana bread, strawberry-rhubarb pies, baked beans, corn bread muffins and oatmeal rolls were all his specialties, and he loved sharing everything he created with the others residents.

Survivors include his children, Brad Hart (Jennifer), Jody Guimond (Bob) and Margo MacDonald (Mac); six grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Anne E. Hart; two brothers, Harry R. Hart and Harley H. Hart and a sister, Esther Lundgren.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 7, 2025 at noon in Grace Congregational United Church of Christ.

Prior to the service, family and friends may gather in the Church Parlor, from 11-12 p.m.

The family graveside will be held in Evergreen Cemetery.
