Peter Joseph Hincks II died on September 1, 2026 at his home in Ft. Pierce FL after an illness. He was born October 22, 1953 in Middlebury, VT to Dr. Philip J. Hincks and Thérèse (Thabault) Harrington. He was named for his grandfather, Peter Joseph Hincks, a banker who served as Vermont state treasurer.
After attending Middlebury High School and graduating from Mt. St. Joseph Academy in Rutland he went on to St. Michael's College in Colchester. A witty and gregarious man who could talk to most anyone, Peter was a natural salesman. He worked for many years for Garden Way Inc. in a variety of sales and management positions. Starting in their Burlington location, these jobs led him to move across the country, significantly to the St. Louis area and to Portland OR. While living in the Pacific Northwest, he developed a love for sailing and explored many of Washington state’s San Juan Islands. A longtime NASCAR fan he enjoyed following the races throughout the season.
Moving back to Rutland, VT in the late 1990s he worked as a sales manager for TimberWolf, travelling around the country. He later became his mother’s caretaker until her death in 2023, after which he moved to Florida.
Survivors include his siblings, Fr. Matthew Hincks of Carrollton OH, James Hincks of South Burlington, Elizabeth Hincks and her husband Larry Groff of San Diego, CA, and Fred Harrington Jr. of Somerville, MA.
He is predeceased by his parents and his stepfather, Dr. Fred Harrington.
Plans are in progress for a memorial in Vermont in October.
Tossing Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
